Every life deserves 9 cats
KucingTa Mu! I love you!
A crowdfunded mural of cats in aid of Independent Pet Rescuers Malaysia & Adoption Network Malaysia. Part of ThinkCity's Arts on the Move programme.
For three months, the Arts on the Move wall was dedicated to our feline friends. Pictures on the mural were crowd-sourced from cat-lovers all over Malaysia. Each picture came with a donation, according to size. These donations were used to neuter and re-home stray cats and dogs found in the vicinity of Masjid Jamek.
Here I would like to share the process, starting from the call for donors through to completion.
Through social media, we crowdsourced for sponsors to fill the wall up with cat pictures. A price list was published and potential sponsors could choose a size according to their budget. Through a series of amusing posts, we were able to fill up 700+ spaces in a just a few weeks.
The campaign name, KucingTaMu was a clever play on the malay words for ‘cat’ (Kucing) and ‘I love you’ (Ku Cinta Mu), and was created by writer Edward Ong, who also made all these cat puns. Happiness is spelled C-A-T!
Aside from the cat photos, the mural also featured illustrations from Kat Rahmat and I Am May.
To create further interest and public engagement, we invited artist Komeil Zarin to draw live on the wall. His piece, drawn with marker pen was titled ‘A stray cat in Kuala Lumpur’. Through these live drawing sessions done by Komeil, Sanuri and Arif Rafhan, (see also here) we have established one indisputable fact: people LOVE watching artists draw!
